Back in 2002, I visited Cape Town for the first time for a shoot. When it’s winter in Europe, Cape Town is one of those go-to destinations if you’re looking to film a “sunny” commercial. It offers everything you could possibly need: stunning, European-like locations, talented actors and models, great food and drinks, and exceptionally skilled film crews.
Over the years, I returned about ten more times. Despite a few short excursions, I realized I had never truly experienced the "real" South Africa.
In 2022, that finally changed. I embarked on a road trip through the country, eager to explore beyond the familiar settings of Cape Town.
It didn’t take long to notice how much the country had changed over the years. Yet, one thing stood out: South Africans still spend a lot of time “on the road.” The roadsides often seemed busier than the highways themselves.
Here’s an account of my three-week adventure, discovering South Africa in a way I never had before.
